Whole Foods Market Gives Back

When Whole Foods Market announced it was supporting NorthShore’s Kellogg Cancer Center patients who have unmet practical and emotional needs, the response was compelling.

In just one day, $29,000 was raised as part of Whole Foods Market’s Community Support Day in which five percent of the day’s net sales in eight locations along the North Shore was donated to support NorthShore’s Psychosocial Oncology Program, which assists more than 4,000 patients every year.

“The results from one day moved our team members, as well as our customers,” said Kristin Sherman, Senior Marketing Specialist for Whole Foods Market. “Everyone is affected, in some way, by cancer. Anything we can do to move forward and assist patients diagnosed with cancer, we’re happy to do. It’s gratifying to know we provide critical support.”

NorthShore’s Psychosocial Oncology Program focuses on understanding and treating the social, psychological, emotional, spiritual, quality-of-life and functional aspects for patients diagnosed with cancer—throughout their treatment and recovery—free of charge. Not only is a patient’s physical health affected, but it’s estimated that between 35 and 45 percent of all cancer patients experience significant emotional distress.

“NorthShore is thankful to have Whole Foods Market as a philanthropic partner,” said Bruce Brockstein, MD, Medical Director of NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center. “The donation is a reminder how the collective small actions of supporters can translate into a considerable gift that has a sizable impact on patient care.”
