Strength and Resiliency, Powered by Giving

In our NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) emergency departments, every hour is rush hour. Our doctors, nurses and support staff work together as a well-oiled machine, triaging and treating increasing volumes of patients—often with little time to spare.

Ernest Wang, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at NorthShore, sees firsthand how far his department has come in recent years. “We are doing unbelievable things,” he said. “We are stronger than ever at acting fast, resuscitating and managing our patients with the latest technology and medical advancements.”

Despite the many patients seen every day and the complexity of their cases, everyone is treated with respect and compassion—no one is ever turned away. Visitors are evaluated as soon as they arrive and triaged according to the severity of their illness or injury.

“Our Emergency Department team is incredibly resilient,” added Dr. Wang. “Doctors, nurses and staff work together and trust each other, often treating patients in critical condition without a break in between. This atmosphere of collaboration and support is unwavering, and it’s truly remarkable to witness.”

Communication is key to making it all run smoothly. Caregivers are in constant communication with patients, families and their colleagues. Everyone is listened to, understood and empowered in the decision-making process.

Dr. Wang says philanthropy has transformed the way his team works, supporting state-of-the-art technology and equipment to enhance the patient experience, such as new stools for our doctors so they can interact with their patients at eye level.

“These moments of human connection and empathy inspire us and help us recharge, which is invaluable as we see patients back-to-back, 24/7,” he shared.

The team is honored to serve our neighbors when every single moment counts. When the unexpected happens. When our patients’ lives depend on highly personalized, compassionate care. We’re grateful to our donors for helping us do it all.
