Meet Jeff Ingeson

"Honestly, if I didn’t get help with paying for these drugs, I don’t think I’d be here."

When Jeff Ingeson was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer, he was told he had only a fifty percent chance of surviving the next five years. Today, his cancer is in remission, but Ingeson faces a lifetime with diabetes, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and other conditions that require him to take seven medications a day.

For the 55-year-old former office manager who is on disability, has no health insurance and is on a fixed and limited income, that’s $400 in monthly prescriptions he just can’t afford. Luckily, his physician at NorthShore University HealthSystem told him about the Medication Assistance Program (MAP), which helps individuals and families receive reduced-cost prescriptions that can manage illness or even save a life. The Medication Assistance Program is supported in part by generous donors who make unrestricted philanthropic gifts to NorthShore.

“For me, this program has literally been a life-saver and makes all the difference in the world,” said Ingeson. “I pay just a fraction of what the medications normally cost, thanks to MAP. Honestly, if I didn’t get help with paying for these drugs, I don’t think I’d be here. I’m just blessed to put my feet on the floor every day and get moving,” he said.

Over 26,000 prescriptions are filled through MAP at NorthShore each year. Unfortunately, prescription drugs continue to be the single greatest out-of-pocket healthcare expense.

“I owe my life and more to NorthShore and I pray that they can continue their good works with programs like MAP,” said Ingeson, who is grateful he’s never had to choose between paying for medications or food. “I’m a beneficiary and I know there are many others like me who have been helped, too.”
