Q and A with Cardiology Chief Dr. Saucedo

Dr. Jorge Saucedo

Dr. Jorge Saucedo is Division Chief of Cardiology and Co-Director of NorthShore’s Cardiovascular Institute (CVI). We asked him to share his thoughts on why philanthropy is so critical to the provision and advancement of heart health today.

1. Why is philanthropy important to NorthShore’s Cardiovascular Institute and why do you yourself give?
NorthShore is one of the greatest teaching health systems in the United States. It's also one of the best integrated systems in the nation, with great care coordination. The Cardiovascular Institute offers the most advanced available cardiac and vascular care. By supporting NorthShore with my own gifts, I know that I’m helping to support a great organization that takes care of our community’s healthcare needs. Philanthropy is crucial to advance medicine, to bring the best care to patients and to train the physicians of the future. We take great pride in being good stewards of the dollars we receive from philanthropy, which will help us achieve our goal to be one of the top 10 CVIs in America.

2. What impact does philanthropy have on the CVI to fund research and clinical care initiatives?
When we invest in research and clinical trials, we can offer our patients state-of-the-art cardiovascular care right here in our community. We can offer access to new therapies, drugs and devices that may not otherwise be available to our patients. Bringing innovation through clinical trials can help increase the well-being and prolong the life of our patients. Philanthropy plays a central role in funding research at NorthShore.

3. Why do we invest in training fellows?
Training the next generation of cardiologists fulfills our educational mission. It's wonderful to be a part of a fellowship program where experienced physicians are involved in training those cardiologists who will be treating many of us in the future. This year, we had 491 applications from across the country for two cardiology training positions at NorthShore. It's a highly sought after opportunity! We’d like to expand this training program, which can only be made possible through philanthropy.

4. How does philanthropy impact the talent pool?
In the last four years, we’ve been fortunate to hire more than a dozen world-class cardiologists to build 13 innovative programs in cardiology, such as advanced heart failure, prevention, weight management, complex coronary interventions, atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, as well as minimally invasive valve interventions. At NorthShore, we are privileged to have national and international thought leaders who are working on the early stages of new drug and device development.

Thanks in part to generous donors, we’ve been able to hire and retain the best cardiologists and physician-scientists in the country. One example is Dr. Mayra Guerrero, a leader in advanced structural heart interventions, who currently replaces not only aortic valves but also mitral valves through catheters inserted in the groin, without opening the chest. Then there's Dr. Ted Feldman, a world-renowned interventional and structural cardiologist who has advanced this field with his internationally-recognized contributions to medicine.

5. What would you like our donors to know about the importance and value of philanthropy?
At NorthShore, we're practicing 21st century medicine, and we're one of the national leaders in cardiovascular care and innovation. We're good stewards of the gifts we receive, and we are committed to placing philanthropy dollars in areas that will reap the greatest return on a donor's investment. We advance programs that can help our patients by bringing world-class innovation and treatments to the communities we serve.
