Summer Benefit to Advance Leading-Edge Orthopaedic Research

Save the Dateā€”June 11, 2016

Bad knees have plagued NorthShore patient Meghan Kirkpatrick since she was 9 years old. At all times she would have to make sure she had a brace with her, especially in gym class, as her knees would often pop out of their sockets and buckle beneath her.

About two years ago, she thought she had broken her leg after falling down a flight of stairs. Instead, her physician at the time found she had no cartilage in her left knee and both knees were out of their sockets. She was referred to NorthShore Orthopaedic Surgery Chairman Jason Koh, MD, who recommended regenerative surgery.

Kirkpatrick had an autologous chondrocyte implantation, a procedure in which the patient’s damaged cartilage is biopsied and then tissue is grown in a lab for several weeks before being placed back into the patient’s knee. The procedure is still new and is evolving, according to Dr. Koh. “We are investigating new procedures that can potentially reduce the recovery time and improve outcomes,” he said. “And we’re exploring other regenerative medicine procedures, such as growth factors and stem cells, to help patients.”

Kirkpatrick says the surgery was definitely worth it. “I don’t have to worry about my knees popping out anymore. I can walk and jump and don’t have to live the rest of my life with bad knees.”

On June 11, The Auxiliary of NorthShore University HealthSystem will host its 2016 Summer Soirée at The Geraghty in Chicago. This year's event will feature hors d’oeuvres, dinner and dessert stations in a cocktail attire format with live entertainment and other surprises as part of the French carnival theme. Proceeds from the evening will support Dr. Koh’s research, “Regenerative Medicine to Restore an Active Life.”

“Further development of treatments to better treat musculoskeletal injuries by examining the use of new materials and growth factors for cartilage, ligament and bone will help harness the body’s own healing potential,” said Dr. Koh, who believes that support will lead to improved patient outcomes and a platform for expanded research.
