Healthy Beginnings:

The Betts Family's Experience

A high-risk pregnancy is a unique healthcare challenge requiring expert coordination between maternal and specialist clinicians to help mother and baby thrive. Stephanie Betts credits NorthShore’s coordination of care, via the nationally recognized Electronic Medical Record system, with helping her through her high-risk pregnancy, explaining that “Everyone caring for me had access to the same information at the same time. I got used to that. I live in McHenry and still see NorthShore healthcare providers.”

In consulting with a fertility specialist, Betts and her husband Jon learned that she had Cushing’s disease, a relatively rare condition that affects the endocrine system by producing tumors on the pituitary gland. Cushing’s can heighten the risk of miscarriage during pregnancy, increasing the need for highly coordinated clinical care. Betts was referred to highly regarded neurosurgeon Ivan S. Ciric, MD, whose warm bedside manner put her at ease. “Dr. Ciric is such a sweet man,” she said. “I knew he was one of the best in his field, and I heard after my surgery from numerous people just how great his reputation is.”

After a successful procedure, Stephanie and Jon learned they were expecting their first child, Grace, in 2010. They returned to NorthShore for care because of their positive experience with Dr. Ciric, and the seamless coordination of care between Neurology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine ensured a safe pregnancy and delivery. After Grace was born, Betts’ endocrinologist found no signs of Cushing’s disease. “Our first experience was fantastic, and we didn’t see any reason to go elsewhere to have Claire and Henry,” Betts said of her younger daughter, born in 2011, and son, born in 2012. Betts chose to designate their family’s gift to the area of greatest need, because “I wanted to show how appreciative I am of the wonderful care I got at NorthShore, and that overall it’s a great place,” she said. “You’re not just a number at NorthShore. They really care about you.”
