Patient Champions Research for
Pancreatic Cancer

NorthShore patient Nancy Banas
and one of her award-winning dogs

Nancy Banas has been through a lot in the last three years. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the 70-year-old has had surgery and several rounds of chemotherapy at NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center.

Despite her medical uncertainty, Nancy decided she needed to do something to advance research for pancreatic cancer, which she believes isn’t as heavily funded as other types of cancers.

Nancy recently decided to make a gift through her will for pancreatic cancer research conducted by Kellogg Cancer Center. She also made a year-end gift through the annual fund. Both gifts honor her physicians: Mark S. Talamonti, MD, who performed an innovative Whipple procedure on her after she was diagnosed, and her oncologist, Robert de Wilton Marsh, MD.

Nancy is happy she’s in a position to help others. “These donations may not help me,” said Nancy. “But I hope the funds for more research will help other patients down the line.”

Nancy said she copes with the disease by having good friends and making the time to attend a Northbrook cancer support group. A neighbor who loves to cook brings her healthy food regularly. She delights in gardening and in her three dogs—Electra, Kicks and Paisley—who bring her “joy.” Nancy has been breeding Miniature Schnauzers for about 20 years and continues to travel to train and show dogs in competition. “I was just at an agility training class,” she said.

For Nancy, her experience at NorthShore has been an easier journey with the help of “my wonderful doctors and the nurses at Kellogg Cancer Center,” she explains.
