Employees Answer the Call, Share Our Spirit

Al Sedivy, Director of Benefits at NorthShore

Sharing Our SpiritOn Sundays, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) employee and Roman Catholic deacon Al Sedivy volunteers his time at Chicago Read Mental Hospital where he reaches out to those in need.

"I see firsthand the need to help the disenfranchised," said Sedivy, Director of Benefits at NorthShore. At Chicago Read, he administers to patients without access to jobs and benefits, which is why, he said, he also donates funds every November to assist the medically underserved through NorthShore's Employee Combined Appeal.

During the month of November, NorthShore Foundation leads the Employee Combined Appeal, a way for employees to make a charitable contribution through a variety of options, including payroll deductions.

The Employee Combined Appeal is part of NorthShore's Sharing Our Spirit campaign. This campaign provides NorthShore employees the opportunity to support three organizations: NorthShore University HealthSystem, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. Sharing Our Spirit encourages employees to donate their time and talent, along with getting involved in other charitable endeavors they wish to pursue throughout the year.

The Employee Combined Appeal offers employees the option to earmark their donation to NorthShore as an unrestricted gift (general support) or to specially designate their donation to a particular department, division, research project or scholarship program.

Liz Farwell, APN, Bariatric Surgery Coordinator, donates to the Nursing Scholarship Fund every year to help those nurses who are furthering their education and continuing on in graduate school. "As a nursing leader, I want to promote nursing excellence because it is a critical part of everything that takes place at NorthShore," said Farwell.

"NorthShore Employees already do so much to go above and beyond for the patients and families we are privileged to serve – that's what makes their giving to NorthShore through the Employee Combined Appeal, as part of Sharing Our Spirit, so very special and greatly appreciated," said Murray Ancell, Executive Director of NorthShore Foundation.

NorthShore employees should watch their email in early November for more information regarding ways to give.
