Breast cancer. Colon surgery. Hip and knee replacements. Mary and Bernie Sergesketter have endured four surgeries between the two of them in the last few years and they say it’s the people and world-class facilities at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) that keep them loyal patients.

For more than 20 years, the couple has supported NorthShore with year-end gifts to the programs of their choice, whether it be the medically underserved, Kellogg Cancer Center, or the unrestricted fund, which directs the donation to where it is needed most. End-of-year giving has become somewhat of an annual tradition for the Sergesketters, who have lived and raised their children on the North Shore for close to 40 years. They have five grandchildren who were born at NorthShore Evanston Hospital.

Bernie Sergesketter, formerly on the Board of Directors at NorthShore, said the couple feels a sense of duty and gratitude when it comes to supporting the organization. “All medical systems are impacted by additional fees and with insurance company caps, it really helps to have contributors,” said Sergesketter. “Plus, NorthShore promotes excellence and it’s an important organization for the area. They’ve taken good care of us.”

His wife, Mary, who had breast cancer surgery at NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital and follow-up radiation treatment at Evanston Hospital, said the stressful March 2012 experience was made better because of the staff and expertise she witnessed at both hospitals. “Everyone I dealt with was so pleasant and discussed with me what to expect every step of the way,” said Mary. “Today, I feel fine and healthy,”

“It’s important to us to give back,” said Bernie.

Charitable giving is vital to the year-round success of NorthShore’s ongoing commitment to deliver the highest level of care, advance innovative research and enhance patients’ quality of life, said Bernard G. Ewigman, MD, Chairman of Family Medicine at NorthShore. “I am fortunate to see firsthand how our care helps ensure positive outcomes for our patients and their families every day.”
