Art Show Supports Cancer Research

As an ovarian cancer patient for the second time, Elaine Rubin says she is more than pleased to support the pioneering research of her oncologist Gustavo Rodriguez, MD, the Matthews Family Chair of Gynecologic Oncology Research in NorthShore’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology. During the last eight years, Rubin said Dr. Rodriguez has been there emotionally for her battles with breast cancer and now multiple myeloma. “He’s there to make sure my care is managed to the max,” said the generous donor.

Besides her physician, Horn also supports the American Craft Exposition (ACE), a juried art show and sale being held August 24-26 (with a benefit preview party the evening of August 23) at The Henry Crown Sports Pavilion at Northwestern University’s Evanston campus. Proceeds from admission sales benefit Dr. Rodriguez’ work into research that is already showing promising results in preventing ovarian cancer in at-risk women.

Clinical trials are underway that support his discovery that taking oral contraceptive pills containing potent progestins lowered ovarian cancer risk in study participants by up to 70 percent.  The progestins “cleanse” and dispose of genetically damaged ovarian cells that have the potential to transform into cancer cells.  Vitamin D provides similar results so testing is concentrating on a combination of those agents to prevent ovarian cancer, the fourth leading cause of death in women.

For Horn, Dr. Rodriguez’ research has extended to the good health of her family and friends. “His devotion and discovery to prevention might have eliminated my journey, but I am nonetheless thrilled to support him and his work. There are no words to sufficiently show my gratitude for his care and to know that his ovarian cancer research will be a gift to future generations,” said Horn.

The 28th American Craft Exposition (ACE) which features the work of some of the premier craft artists in the country and supports critical cancer research at NorthShore, begins with a benefit Preview Party Thursday, August 23. The Preview Party and Collectors’ Hour, which includes hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, provides guests the opportunity to talk with the artists and purchase their work before the exposition opens to the public. Tickets to the preview party are $125 and Collectors’ Hour are $175.

ACE opens to the public Friday, August 24, and runs through Sunday, August. 26. Tickets for three-day admission are $13 through August 20, and $15 at the door. For more information and to purchase tickets online, visit: americancraftexpo.org.
