Dart Foundation Grant Eases the Way for Cancer Patients

Representatives from the Dart Foundation present a check to staff at Highland Park Hospital’s Kellogg Cancer Center.

NorthShore Highland Park Hospital’s Kellogg Cancer Center is a busy place, with more than 9,000 patients seen and treated in just the last year. While patients enter the main hospital entrance through automatic sliding doors, the doors leading to the Kellogg Cancer Center waiting room are operated manually to keep patients protected from the cold and hot temperatures outside.

Because patients are often weakened from cancer treatments, have limited mobility or are in wheelchairs, patients and their families can have difficulty opening the doors. NorthShore recently received funding from the Dart Foundation to install an automatic door opener that will assist cancer patients as they enter Kellogg Cancer Center for treatment.

“The clinical team at the Highland Park Hospital Kellogg Cancer Center is grateful to the Dart Foundation for the automatic door opener and the daily benefit it will provide to our patients,” said Martha Wallace, Clinical Nurse Manager.

“We strive every day to find ways to make our patients’ cancer journeys a little easier. Opening a door can seem like such a simple task unless you’re feeling weak, tired and vulnerable. The doors of the Kellogg Cancer Center are opened by hundreds of cancer patients and their loved ones each week. Thanks to the Dart Foundation, it’s going to get a lot easier.”

The Dart Foundation is a private family foundation established by Dart Container Corporation founder William A. Dart and his wife Claire T. Dart. The Foundation supports projects that enhance education—especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math—and those that improve the quality of life in specific communities.
