Children Bring Cheer to Patients

The notion of giving to others in need certainly is not lost on children at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Child Development Center, which recently held a Penny War fundraiser between classes to benefit NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center. The 3-to-5-year-olds, many of whom are children of NorthShore employees, made cheery cards for patients and met with physicians and nurses to proudly present their artwork and a check for $200.

Karen Diehl, Assistant Director of Bright Horizons, the name of NorthShore’s Child Development Center, said the 30 children also paraded around the block, with many wearing pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The group then headed down Ridge Road to Evanston Hospital’s Kellogg Cancer Center to hand deliver their cards filled with positive wishes for patients.

“It was a great day,” Diehl said of the day’s activities. “Even though they’re young, children know about family and friends who are or have been ill,” she added.
