Challenge Accepted!

Johnny and Carolina Mariduena are open for business selling snow cones to raise funds for Covid-19 Care Kits. As a rising middle-schooler, Johnny’s parents thought the time was right to introduce him to the importance of giving back.

An email Johnny's parents received from NorthShore sparked the idea to support the Covid-19 Care Kit Challenge. 90% of NorthShore Covid-19 patients are recovering at home because their symptoms are mild. But the virus can escalate quickly. Sometimes patients don’t realize they are getting sicker, often with very low levels of oxygen. The kits contain critical supplies for a non-hospitalized patient—a pulse oximeter to identify when oxygen levels are too low, masks to reduce transmission to family members, and hand sanitizer to kill the virus.

From there, the snow cone cart idea was born. “One day while I was outside relaxing my dad asked me what if we made a snow cone cart. Since my neighbor and my sister both had little stores I thought what if I had a store, too” according to Johnny.

From Johnny’s first drawing he and his dad built the white and blue cart. “Then we got the ice crusher and had everything ready after I painted the cart though I put signs on all the lamp posts on my block”. Johnny said that the first signs didn’t survive a heavy rain.

Not deterred, 10 people came to the Thursday soft opening, and were all set for opening day.
