A healthy heart is vital to living a fulfilling and comfortable life. The heart pumps oxygen and nutrients throughout our body every second of every day, without us even noticing. But for nearly half of American adults, cardiovascular disease and heart failure is a looming reality. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, causing one death every 37 seconds.
Knowing that heart health is critical to leading healthy lives, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) has emerged as a leader in cardiovascular medicine. With 14 programs and more than 50 specialist physicians, the NorthShore Cardiovascular Institute has already been pioneering groundbreaking procedures that have saved lives.
And thanks to institutional and philanthropic support, NorthShore physically broke ground at the site of the new, 170,000-square-foot, premier Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) pavilion on NorthShore’s Glenbrook Hospital campus in Glenview. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2024.
“Our vision is to create a center of cardiovascular excellence that brings together world-renowned experts and emerging technologies such as AI, robotics and genetic testing,” said Gregory Mishkel, MD, MBA, the Allstate Foundation/Judson B. Branch Chair of Cardiology, Chief, Division of Cardiology and Co-Director, CVI. “From prevention to recovery, we are committed to using the best of cardiovascular medicine to treat the whole person.”
The CVI pavilion will serve as NorthShore’s central hub for elective cardiac and vascular procedures, catheterizations and interventions, as well as structural heart procedures and electrophysiology studies. The complex will also become a focus for the development of women’s heart health, sports cardiology, cardio-oncology and cardiac rehabilitation; and will house six new CVI-dedicated operating rooms and nine new labs.
NorthShore launched its CVI program in 2015 and since then has experienced significant procedural growth across all spectrums of cardiovascular care—a position of market strength that shaped a strong desire to expand CVI’s growing geographic distribution.
“Patients also will benefit from innovative clinical trials and breakthrough research, featuring world-class training and fellowship opportunities for physicians,” said Hyde M. Russell, MD, the Owen L. Coon Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-Director, CVI. “We are collaborating with the best and brightest minds in cardiovascular medicine to elevate the care we provide to our patients.”
In addition to serving as home to the new CVI, Glenbrook Hospital will continue to be a general medical/surgical hospital, providing non-cardiovascular perioperative procedures and full Emergency Department capabilities.
