The Auxiliary Projects and Events
The Auxiliary at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals supports the Hospitals and community of NorthShore University HealthSystem not only through their fundraising events, but also through various service projects. Your philanthropic donation of time, talent and treasure helps The Auxiliary serve the community with an annual nursing scholarship, educational presentations in area schools, flowers for NorthShore University HealthSystem patients, coloring books for Emergency Department waiting rooms, holiday hats for newborns born in December and much more. For more information or to volunteer for any of these projects, please contact The Auxiliary at 224.364.7270.
Auxiliary Annual Fall Meeting
The Auxiliary hosted their Annual Fall Meeting on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at the Glen View Club. The program included the presentation of the 2013 Gala proceeds to Demetrius Maraganore, MD, an update from Mark Neaman, President and Chief Executive Officer of NorthShore University HealthSystem, and a discussion from Catherine Pesce, MD about the BRCA I and II genes. Over 50 Auxiliary members were in attendance.
The Auxiliary also held a children’s book drive to benefit the NorthShore University HealthSystem Pediatric Outpatient Clinic’s Reach Out and Read Program.
Honorary Directors of The Auxiliary at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals
The Hospital Outreach Committee touches the hearts of patients at NorthShore Glenbrook and NorthShore Evanston Hospitals by delivering flowers to patient rooms twice a year. Many volunteers find helping with this committee to be very rewarding, and their hard work putting together and distributing flowers is much appreciated by the patients they visit.
This committee also sponsors the Holiday Decorating Contest every year for departments at Glenbrook and Evanston Hospitals. Since NorthShore University HealthSystem employees are a significant part of the community we serve, spreading cheer within Hospital Departments is truly important.
Member Claudine Gerbel (right) awards Allison Sajnaj with The Auxiliary’s 2013 Nursing Scholarship award
Every year, the Auxiliary offers a $5,000 college scholarship to a high school senior in our core service area who plans to pursue an education in the field of nursing. The current nursing shortage crisis has been strongly documented, both nationally and regionally. Since NorthShore is committed to the future of healthcare, Auxiliary members felt that this scholarship would be a well-directed effort.
All students with a desire to further their education in nursing at a college level are encouraged to apply each spring. Congratulations to the 2013 Nursing Scholarship Winner Allison Sajnaj, who attended Loyola Academy and will be studying nursing at Xavier University. For more information about the scholarship, contact the Auxiliary at 224.364.7270. Applications are currently open and can be found here.
Hospitals to Children
The Hospitals to Children committee visits second grade classrooms between the months of March and May to familiarize children with the NorthShore University HealthSystem Hospitals and reduce anxiety about visiting a hospital. Volunteers bring a slide-show presentation chronicling a child’s visit to the emergency room and showing the many people and places that make up a hospital. They also give mini-plaster finger casts to the class and leave each student with a packet of information to take home to their parents.
December Infant Gifts
Past Auxiliary President Madonna Tideman (left) and President Annmarie Trapp show off infant hats
The Auxiliary December Infant Gifts Committee spends the year sewing winter hats for infants born at NorthShore Evanston Hospital during the month of December. In the last week of November, the committee visits the Hospital to distribute red and white or blue and white hats to new mothers and babies and leaves enough on hand to last throughout the month.
This committee looks for volunteers who are handy with a needle to help with the sewing throughout the year.
